Troops
were
tricked
When the Queen and Duke visited the Austra- lian War Memorial at Canberra yesterday they were keenly amused by the tale of a bridle and reins in a glass cabinet.
They belonged to the "amazing" horse of Major-General Pompey Elliott, when he com- manded the 15th Infantry Brigade in France.
Troops of the First A.I.F. credited the horse
with unusual powers be- cause it would stop and point with its ears at an unshaven soldier on parade.
Not till long after- wards did thc troops realise that the wily general had trained the horse to do this when he nudged it in the neck.
