DEATH OF FORMER ADMINISTRATOR OF RABAUL.

Advice was received in Canberra yesterday that the death had occurred in June, 1942, of Mr. Harry Orton Townsend, of Brisbane, a former Brit- ish Administrator of Rabaul.

Mr. Townsend lost his life when the Japanese prison ship, Montevideo Maru, was torpedoed off the Philip- pines. He had been captured at Rabaul, having stayed there to help in the evacuation of the population.

Also on board the ship was Mr. Har- old Page, brother of Sir Earle Page.

Mr. Townsend leaves a w¡dow, at     present residing in Brisbane.

He was the brother of the late Mr. A. R. Townsend, of Forrest, Canberra, and uncle, of Miss Elizabeth Townsend and Mr. Neil Townsend, of Forrest.
