MARIA MARKAN

Opens Season in Canberra

Among Ihc conspicuous successes achieved by the young Icelandic so- prano, Maria Markan, was in "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Glynde bourne Festival. This , reminds of that unusual musical mecca founded five yearss ago amidst lovely sur- roundings in Sussex- by the wealth and enthusiasm of John Christie, and devoted particularly to the foster- ing of interest in the music of Moz- art. Its opera house ia said to be as perfect-a place for its purpose as the wit of man could devise. Maria Markan made her first appearance in' Great Britain in company with

John Brownlee and other well-known artists, and the critics "warmly ap- plauded her dignity in the part of the Countess, her acting, and the quality cf her voice, one journal stating, "As the. Countess, Maria

Markan brought us a voice blended of silver and gold."

Miss Markan's Icelandic origin has led to the reference "The Ice Maiden from Ultima Thule," and, as the Scandinavian countries aro vitally in the news at present, her visit to Canberra possesses special signifi-

cance.

This young and attractive singer was trained in Berlin and she created a sensation in her own capital, Reyk- javik, uprn her return. Later she sang at Stockholm before the Kings of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and appealed in opera in many con- tinental cities, singing in Danish, German, Italian and English. In her repertoire arc included the best Heder of the northern countries, those of Germany, and songs and ballads by Italian and English emposcrs.

Maria Markan's first public con- cert in her Australian tour arranged by the Broadcasting Commission, will be given at the Albert Hall on Tuesday, April 23, in the presence of Their Excellencies the Governor General and Lady Gowrie. The as- sisting Australian artists will be Kenneth Neate (tenor) and Carl Bartling, solo pianist and accompan- ist, both of whom have achieved suc- cess in their broadcast» recítala.

on Sunday evening, to assist the war fund appeal inaugurated by Her Excellency. This will be the ta'ontcd I artist's first introduction to an Aus-

tralian public.

. The local arrangements for Miss Markan's concert on Tuesday have been made by the Canberra Musical Society, and box plans arc now open at the usual places.

It is certain that thos1" who hear

this ,brilliant singer on Sunday will desire to see and hear her to fuller advantage at her own recital.
