FIRE MENACE EASED
Rain Fell in Many
Parts
MORE SHOWERS EXPECTED
SYDNEY, Tuesday
With the heat wave broken throughout the State, light rain was falling in many inland centres to-day Some good falls were recorded all coastal districts, while there was steady rain on the southern table
lands
A special forecast, issued by Mr Mares to-night, promises extensive and general rains throughout the State before the end of the week
To-day, only three towns reported
a continuance of the heat wave. They were Walgett 110, Bourke 104,
Coonabarraban 102.
BEACH BATHERS CRITICISED
"It is a pity that civilisation in the growth of a city too often compels the spirit of the pioneer, of help to others, to recede into the back-
ground "
This statement was made to-day by the Minister for Education (Mr Drummond) when commenting on the spectacle of thousands of people, many of them physically fit, sitting on the beaches "coolly disregarding the fire menace which last Saturday threatened to destroy homes and in some cases the lives of owners"
CLAIMS FOR INSURANCE
More than 600 claims from fire loss were lodged with Sydney insurance companies to-day It was stated that several companies had received claims of £15,000 and more.
The president of the Fire and Ac- cidents Insurance Associations (Mr Reynolds) said that it was impossible to accurately estimate the insurable damage throughout the State for at
least a week
PINE FORESTS THREATENED
CASINO, Tuesday
After fighting dangerous fires, which yesterday threatened the pine and hardwood forests of the Rich- mond Range, forestry officers blamed careless campers and fishing parties for the outbreaks They said it was time the Government imposed severe penalties for carelessness in regard to camp fires
YASS FIRES UNDER CONTROL
The absence of rain in the Yass district is causing some alarm. The fires are now under control but stock are in need ot water and grass. Tank water on the outlying stations is very low and the position will be serious if rain does not fall within the next few days. The township itself is not suffering a shortage as the residents are receiving a good supply of water
since the introduction of a filtration plant a few months ago
CONTRIBUTIONS TO RELIEF
FUNDS
MELBOURNE, Tuesday.
The public is contributing gener- ously to the various funds for the re- lief of bush fire victims, and nearly £80,000 has been subscribed to date
The fires are now under control, but there is still danger in Gippsland and the North East, where insuffi- cient rain has fallen to quell the fires
Hundreds of men are working to make the position safe, in the event of a recurrence of hot weather
Mr and Mrs Gordon Davis, of Fitzroy, who were reported missing, arrived in Melbourne to-day from
Walhalla.
