A Japanese Story.
ONCE upon a time the queen of the fishes was very sick. None of the royal doctors could cure her. At last a very wise old doctor was called in.
ana he examined the queen. "There i* only one thing that win cure her majesty." he said. "What is that?" cried all the courtiers together. "The ttv«r of a live monkey," he replied. At ffe* all the other doctors lauyhed at this, but when they saw Qic queen was not getting any better, they decided to try this strange prescription. Thus the* called all the fish together, and drew lots as to who was to get a live mon key. The lot fen on the Jelly-fish, wbe In those days still had lus bones! and was quite a strong fish. After making his few preparations; therefore, he-set off on his strange quest. .He swam and swam and swam for five days, and then he came i? sight of an island. When he came near the shore he saw many monkeys up la the trees on the island. So he called out to a big monkey that was eatinz i taut: "Mr. Monkey, would you like te go to a place where there are plenty of nuts and fruit?" "Yes, I would," re plied the monkey. Jump «n nr back, and I will take you to a Dlaoel know of," said the jelly-fish. The mon key then slid down the tree and jumped on to the back of the Jelly-fish and they started on their lon* jDurnej. After the jelly-fish had been swim, ming for four days he suddenly sakfc "Mr. Monkey, have you got a liverr 1 "Why, yes," said the monkey, "why do,, you ,ask?" "WeU- y?u Ke>" saW the Jelly-fish, *the queen of the fishes is very sick, and the doctor said she most have the liver of a live monkey to make her better again." "Oh, why didn't you tell me. that be fore." said the monkey. "As a matter of fact, I have two livers, but I JeJt them on the island. It has been very wet lately, and I hung them on a tree to dry." "I suppose the only thing to do t*—E k t? <?o back again," said the poor So he turned round and swam wean ily back to the island again. When they got near to the shore the monkey sprang up a near by tree, and saML "I'm very sorry, Mr. Jelly-fish, butl only have one liver, and X want It my*. Thereupon the jelly-fish swam home again, and told his story. The other fish were so angry that they took stick* and beat the Jelly-fish to a pulp. And that is how the jelly-fish lost all his bon^s.
