Government Notice.
Colonial Secretary's Office SYDNEY, 12th AUGUST, 1831 EMIGRANT LABOURERS.
THE Right Honourable the SECRE-
TARY of State has communicated to the Governor, that it has been pro- posed to send to New South Wales a portion of the superfluous Agricultural Population of the South of England, provided that means can be devised for making up the additional expense occa- sioned by the greater length of the pas- gage to this country than to North Ame- rica; and in order to ascertain to what extent the Colonists are disposed to pro- mote a measure which, if practicable, cannot fail to be highly advantageous to the Colony, Circular Letters have been addressed to the Magistrates and princi- pal Landholders in the interior.
In addition to this, all persons resident in the district of Sydney, who may be desirous of obtaining Labourers of the description in question, are now invited to address letters to the Colonial Secre- tary, before the 20th of this month, con- taining the following particulars; viz.
1. The number of free Agricultural La-
hourers, or other Workmen, which they are respectively desirous of obtaining, lind the sum of money they will engage to contribute towards bringing out each, whether unmarried or with a family.
2. The wages they will undertake to pay
them, on their entering into indentures for a period not exceeding seven years. 3. The number of free Labourers or
Workmen they are willing to employ, and at what rate of wages, under in- denture as above, if the men and their families be conveyed hither without any contribution, on the part of the Colonists, towards defraying the ex- pense of their passage.
In order to prevent disappointment, it will be convenient and satisfactory if the required particulars be stated in an en- gagement of the annexed form.
13y His Excellency's Command,
ALEXANDER M'LEAY.
FORM OF ENGAGEMENT.
I, A. B. of C, in the Colony of New South Wales, being desirous of obtaining the services of ----- agricultural la- bourers from England, do hereby engage to deposit in the hands of the Colonial Treasurer, whenever the Colonial Go- vernment shall require it, the sum of --- pounds sterling, towards the ex- pense of conveying the said --- agri- cultural labourers to this Colony, to be bound by indenture to serve me for the term of-years.
Given under my hand, this
