THE POLICE.

FRIDAY, JULY 21.-Joseph Williams, prisoner of the crown for life, charged with stealing from the outside premises of Mr. Abraham Polack, one half chest of tea. On an alarm being given Mr. Polack promptly pursued the prisoner into Upper Pitt-street, where he had the chest of tea on his shoulders and threw it down on Mr. Polack's ap- proaching him. The evidence was so conclusive against the prisoner (who offered no defence, but pleaded that it was his first offence) that the Bench sentenced him to a penal settlement tor 3 years.

Susan Cadwallador, prisoner of the crown for 14 years, the refractory and incorrigible wife of a man of that name, who charged her with being re- peatedly drunk and leaving his house open and unprotected during his absence. Three months to the Factory.

Joseph Fry, free, convicted of purchasing soldiers necessaries, (viz. a sheet) from a private of the 30th regiment, was fined under the 6 Geo. IV. cap. 6. in the sum of four pounds.

William Campbell, prisoner of the crown, ori- ginally under sentence for 7 years, but since under a Colonial sentence, was charged by Richard Jones, Esq. J. P. and Merchant of Hunler-street, with having stolen 14 casks, which had been landed on the Government Domain, from the ship Wood- man. The prisoner, it appeared by evidences, had sold the casks at different timess to a house in

George-street, to whom he represented himself lo be a cooper, and had received 35s. for each cask. To a penal settlement for 3 years.

John Marlin, free, charged with having inde- cently exposed his person to several young ladies, inmates of a respectable boarding school, in York street, under circumstances of great aggravation and turpitude, was sentenced to the gaol, as the house of correction for 3 months, under 3 Geo. IV.

Three prisoners of Ihe crown, found out after hours, intoxicated or absent from their service, were severally ordered to the tread-mill for short periods, according to the nature of their offences.

SATURDAY, JULY 22.-Michael Downing, Sydney constable, charged with having received money from two prisoners confined in the watch house, in order to purchase for them provision and spirits, which latter article had been introduced in a bladder in the early part of the night, and partaken of by Downing and the others in the watch-house; but whether Downing had brought

in the bladder or not, was not satisfactorily ascertained.   The Bench, reprobating such highly im-   proper conduct in a constabie, ordered him to be suspended from rank and pay for the term of 14 days.

apprehended in the act of fighting in the street last night, at 8 o'clock, by means whereof a mob had assembled, and the public peace was endan- gered. Treadmill for 10 days.

Thomas Smith, free, in whose house an iron   axle-tree, the properly of John Boyd, which had been stolen from him about 6 weeks since was found under ihe authority of a search warrant.

Was remanded.

One man, free, found drunk on the Brickfield hill at a late hour last night. Fined 5s. to the poor.

There were several cases of minor importance brought forward, which occupied the Bench until half past three, when it adjourned.

MONDAY, JULY 24.-Thomas Smith, free, in whose possession, under the authority of a search warrant, HU iron axle-tree was found, whicn had been stolen about U weeks since from a man named John Boyd, at which time it was attached io a cart, remanded from Saturday last. Committed for

trial.

Michael Canning, prisoner of the crown for life, remanded from Saturday, for having on the Isl of July, run from the tread-mill to which he had been sentenced for 28 dava, on the 28th June last, deemed an incorrigible offender. Fifty lashes and

to be returned to his station.

John Perkins, blacksmith and cook to Mr.

Cutter, was brought up, charged by his master with having refused lo practise in the culinary deparlinent on Sunday last, and moreover with having allowed sundry " pretty chickens and their dam" to be out under the somewhat weighty, though refreshing showers, on the above named day. It appeared, that Mr. Cutter having bad occasion to pass near the confines of the kitchen in the morning, and perceiving the " full fledged brood" revelling m the stream, called to the afore- said John Perkins to remove them to a place of shelter where they could be less liable to catch cold, at the same time designating bim hy sundry opprohious epithets, amongst which " idle rascal," and " dirty scoundrel," were most conspicuous, and as the man alleged, summing up all with a

most confounded box on the ear. Poor Perkins thought this very hard. " Idle rascal !" says he to a man who worked six days as a blacksmith, and by way of recreation, turneil-lo as a cook on the seventh ! A " dirty scoundrel," however, he was determined not lu remain any longer, so trimming himself up with ali speed, in the vib- re nee ot Mr. Cutter, he cut off to church and remained away a whole two hours and a half. For tins offtiice his master, on his return, pro- posed sending him lo lake up his lodging " where roaring blades, and night nymphs dwell," but having thought better on it, he gave up that part of his design, and brought bim before their Worships, to be dealt with, on the following morning. It appearing to the Bench that John Perkins had absconded himself without permis- sion he was ordered to give up his other trades, mid practise as a tuillrr tor 3 days.

Thomas Woods, prisoner of the crown for 14 years, charged with having stolen a shirt and 3 pair of stockings, from the garden ol'a gentleman, where they were left by the owner, Elizabeth Bunnan, a servant, to dry. The prisoner was detected in the garden with Ihe properly, and secured. To a penal settlement for 3 year*.

Thomas Lawler, prisoner of the crown for 7 years, found in the rear of a person's premises, in Castiereagh-stn-et, under very strong circum- stances of suspicion, and who, when detected, resisted and attempted to overpower the party who came to apprehend him. Fourteeu days to

Charles Wilson, prisoner of the crown for 14 years, apprehended as a runaway from the Dock- yard, from which he had been absent several days. To the tread-null for 21 days.

Six persons, amongst whom was a female of notorious character as a drunkard, were severally fined 5s. each to the poor, for being found in a state of intoxication in the streets at late

hours.

PARRAMATTA FOLICE.

FHIDAY, JULY 21.-Mary Grady and Sarah Potter, were brought forward, charged by Thomas Welsh, constable, who deposed that about 10 o'clock, the preceding night, he heard a noise in the street of female voices, stimulated by a spiri- tual regimen, directing their ding-dong artillery of invective against each other, and byway of modi- fying their " mental hate," he introduced them to a comfortable lodging for the night. Ordered to pay a fine of ii, to the poor, or to sit two hours in

the stocks.

John Walker and James Green, attached to the Richmond-road Parly, were confined on a charge of robbery.

James Smith, son of Janies Smith, builder, at Parramatta, deposed, that he was about lo retire to his room at the hour of nine o'clock the night he fore, when, as he approached the door, the pri- soner Walker ran out. On examination it was found (hat he had collected the contents of a trunk, aud the coverings from two beds, and tied them up in a large bundle ready for carrying off.

Henry James, corporal of His Majesty's body guard, deposed, that on hearing the cry of " stop thief," about 9 o'clock last night, he ran out of the lodge at Government-gate, and perceived a man running across the road without a hat; he pursued and apprehended bim; that the prisoner Walker was the person ; that Mr. Smith's servant came up shortly after he had gol hold of and assisted in securing him.

John Ellison, a publican, deposed to the two pri- soners being in company, drinking at his house that evening, at 5 o'clock, and thal they were un- der the influence of spirits. A hat feuud at the door of Mr. Smith's bouse, being produced full of ribbons, aHd other articles belonging to him was sworn to by Ellison, lo be the same ihe prisoner Walker wore at his bouse. The prisoners were re-

manded for a Bench.

Mary Kane or Kennedy, a free woman (who having descried her husband, lives in a state of adultery with another mau, keeping a house of ill fame), appeared under summonses, to answer for harbouring Sophia Frazier and James Higgins, two prisoners of the crown, III her house tippling.

Bernard Crummy, constable, deposed to his going to ihe accused's house, where he found the two prisoners of the crown, ihe woman Frazier was intoxicated and silting on the side of a bed with Higgins, there was a tumbler with about half a pint of spirits in it, and a gla*s before them on the table. He took them in charge and confined them. Benjamin Rally, constable, corroborated

the above on oath.

The Bench (notwithstanding Ibe case being clearly proved, and the accused being so frequently brought forward for similar offences) in considera- tion of her poverty, and having a large family, ad- monished her severely against a repetition of such conduct and discharged her. ;.

WINDSOR POLICE.

SATURDAY, JULY 15.- Thomas Bolton, ship Guildford, a runaway from Longbottom Establish- ment, wa« brought up for the decision of the Court. Ile had been apprehended as a runaway, and, but for his own wily ways, he would have been returned, as usual, to the place whence he absconded. He hit upon a stratagem, while in confinement, to deceive the turnkey, by making a false représentation, that he had a quantity of stolen properly concealed in the bush; of course he hoped to receive compensation for information. The prisoner was taken to the place where he said the property was deposited : no such properly lhere. Upon the alert, the Windsor Police did, not allow this to pass unnoticed ; the secret was followed up closely, and the prisoner fully com- mitted fora robbery. Sentenced three years ad- ditional sentence, and to be returned lo Long,

bottom to be dealt with (or the desertion.

Charles Williams, ticket of leave, claimed wages for services while a prisoner. He had been as- signed as superintendant^ man, by way of in- dulgence, according to the old practice, some time ago abolished. He had held his ticket-of. leave 17 months, and had deferred his application to this date. The master always conceived he had satisfied all claims against him by the said man, and produced receipts in full of all demands, since the time of the ticket-of-leave having been enjoyed. Defendant had permitted the said man to work for any one for his own benefit, while a prisoner, according to the custom of former times. Complaint dismissed.

Palmer Carney claimed a settlement for labour in husbandry, performed on account of Timothy Connor. The testimony now given differed widely from that upon which the summons had been granted. A partnership existed between the parties. Case dismissed.

William Moore, Guildford (5), life, stood charged with having in his possession, knowing the same to be stolen, a green cloth coat, the pro- perty of Anthony Jonquay, of Windsor. The prisoner was formerly the Government servant of Jonquay, and had many a lime brushed the said coat, and had a perfect kno»vledge of (he shape, make, and condition thereof; he had been spoken to about replacing three bu'tons required thereon, li had undergone, while in hit» custody, certain disfiguration since it had left Jonquay's premises, under the experience of Moore, who is a tailor, and it was intended soon to appear before the world's eye III the shape of a jacket. Moore had lately performed a kind office, by escorting his late master from a public-house, on which occa- sion he had amply remunerated himself, by taking away the coarin question, after carefully perfor- ming other little acts of seeming kindness towards his late master. The identity of the fact was fully made out by the owner, describing a parti- cular mark in the sleeve thereof, which was sub- sequently discovered thereon ; and a Court of General Session found the prisoner guilty. Sen- tenced 3 years to a penal settlement.

William Ashton, who was found guilty of having committed an assault on the body of an infant, this day was placed in the pillory, oppo- site the Court-house, Windsor, during its sidings. This punishment is lo be renewed quarterly for the term of two years. He cut a sorry figure, and he who accidentally cast an eye upon him turned aside in abhorrence of such an offender.

Peter Turney, ship Sesostris, life, Government servant to Richard Norris, was brought before the Court by a warrant (rum the Police Office, Wind- sor, which set forth-"To be forwarded to the Bench at Windsor, there lo have his case enquired into." Turney staled, thal on the 1st of July he was brought before the Windsor Police, on ihe complaint of his master, and was punished ; that, on his return, he was having his hair eui, and his mistress snatched the scissar» away, and said he should not have it cul lhere ; and farther, that his said mistress said he should have no peace while he remained there ; and still further, that his master had ordered him to go and dwell in a place without a cover, a door, a window, or fire- place; and added that a fellow-servant of his could prove his assertion. A summons was im- mediately issued for the prisoner's witness,'who being sworn stated, that his mistress look away the scissars, saying it would spoil them ; that no ill-natured language accompanied her conduct, and thai ihe words used by the prisoner, before the Court, were false ; that the complainant slept in the same place with deponent ; and thai he never observed any di litre nee in the treatment towards deponent and complainant. The priso- ner is a sail-maker, and would like very much lo go to Sydney Dock yard. Sentenced 28 days lo the tread-mill, and to be returned.

Two prisoners claimed a settlement from their master, which was ordered ; and the prisoners were cautioned, as to some irregularity on their part. Some other particulars being stated, the matter was disposed of, without interest to the au*

dience.

William Peasnall. ship Hebe, life, was charged with stealing a pelisse, the properly of Ann M'Cann, of Caddie. Circumstances were very apparent of the prisoner's guilt. Remanded.

Peter Vaughan was ordered to pay Brien Lach- lan 30s. wages, due for labor in husbandry.
