SOME REMARKABLE QUESTIONS.
DO YOU DRINK?
[From Our Special Representative.]
MELBOURNE, September 14.
The Minister for Home Affairs has de- cided that the questions of a private na- ture to be put in connection with next year's census may be answered in such a way that the information will not be open to the collectors. Questions in ad- dition to those already prescribed in the Act will relate to (1) unemployment, (2) salary, (3) use of alcoholic beverages, (4) rent of dwelling, and (5) number of chil- dren by present or previous marriage. A special sheet of the census paper will contain the private questions such as that relating to the salary, and the citizen, after filling in the answer, may turn down the
page and seal it. The only persons to
whom the information will then he open will be the confidential staff of the Statistician's office. It is slated by the Commonwealth officers in charge of the census that it is compulsory upon citizens to answer all questions.
