PHAR LAP'S TRAINER WINS AETER14 YEARS
-pp>
MELBOURNE, Saturday.-Phar Lap's trainer, Harry Telford saddled a winner for the first time in 14 years when Silver Hawk scored to-day at Caulfield.
Silver Hawk, a grey colt, gained a photo-finish decision over . Harmonist, with Stannum third, in the Balwyn Handicap.
Telford could not remember the name of his last winner.
"It was a Manitoba mare at Williamstown before the war," he
said.
Silver Hawk was heavily backed, and-firmed from 9-2 to start equal favourite with The Beau at 3-1
Backers of Silver Hawk were not confident as the leaders rounded the home turn, where The Beau and Stannum were in front with jockey E. Preston hard at work on Silver Hawk and five lengths behind them.
Harmonist put in his claim at the furlong, and took charge from Stannum, but finishing with giant strides on the outside the big rakish grey caught Harmonist in the last stride to gaint a .half head decision. ' " '" '"". " " '"' '. ','"'
