DEATH OF SIR JOHN ROBERTS.
WELLINGTON (N.Z.), Thursday.
The death is announced of Sir John Roberts, of Dunedin, at the age of 89 years. He was one'of New Zealand's most prominent citizens and founder of the well-known firm of Murray, Roberts, and Company, stock and station agents.
Sir John Roberts played a leading part in the commercial and civic life of Dunedin. He was deputy chairman of the board of directors of the Union Steamship Company until his re- tirement in 1914. He was president of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, held in Dunedin in 1889. Mayor of Dunedin in 1890, Vice-Chancellor of the Otago University, 1913-21. and a director of many companies. He was created C.M.G. in 1891, and knighted in 1920. In 1932 the freedom of Selkirk, Scot- land, his native town, was conferred upon
