CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT.
(Before the Chief Justice, Sir William
Cullen.)
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.
Septimus Hampton Herschman, 26, was
charged with having feloniously slain Ada Caroline Nowitzki, a married woman.
The accused was defended by Mr. Badham,
instructed by Mr. W. M. Daley.
The Crown Prosecutor stated that shortly after 10 p.m. on July 19 accused, while driving
a motor car along George-street West, knocked down Mrs. Nowitzki, who was killed instantly. The night was a wet one, and it was alleged that accused was driving his car at more than the ordinary speed. When questioned some days later accused de- nied that he was in George-street West. Instead of being stopped, the motor car was
driven in the direction of Grace Brothers, and then disappeared. Ono witness who took the number of the car noticed that the tail light was put out immediately afterwards.
The accused denied having been in George- street West on the night of the accident.
The Jury, having failed to agree, were locked up for the night.
