A letter received by tho hon. secretary of! 17th Battalion Comforts Committee, from Colonel Martin, acknowledge» the receipt and dlnliibution of 17 caaes. The private parcclB were given to addreasecs, aud the other com-| forts divided equally iimungst the men. Colonel Martin says:-"Though muan better situated in France, the men being able to go into tho villages and make purcnaaes, still tho fnot that theso comforts carno from homo made them much more valuable. A successful euchre party and danco was hold in tho Oxford Hall Llverpool-Btroet, on July, 17. in aid of Messrs. Elliott Bros.' Patriotic Fund, the committee consisting of Mr. C. J. Ward, secretary; Mr. V. Riley, treasurer; Miss T. Martin, Miss K. Nobb», Mr. R. Donnld, and Mr. R. Shiner. Little Miss Essie Fratus contributed to the programme by singing and dancing Mr. J. Hughes also tang.- Refreshments wore managed by Mrs. M'Namara, MrB. Beard, Mrs. Klrtchnor, and Mrs. Shiner. Mr. C. J. Ward was M.C.
Mrs. von Goes gave a dinner party at tho Queen's Club on Thursday, In honour, of Madame Melba. The tables wero beautified with sweet pea and violets, and an Italian string band was In attendance. The work of the Babies' Kit Society Is widespread. A letter has been rccolvod fruin a member of tho Servian Relief Fund, Lon- don, thanking tho society for babies' kits to bo sent to Corsica. Other lettora of thanks have boen rccolvod from tho War Refugees Committee, tho interned Belgian Soldiers' Fund, King Albert's Civilian Hos- pital Fund, tho French Red CroBB, and the Belgian Relief Fund. Tho Drat anniversary of tho opening of tho Soldiers' Convalescent Home, at Cronulla, took placo in tho local School of Arts on July 20. Tho hall was crowded, tho celebra- tions taking the form of a social,' was a great success. Tableaux were cleverly staged, and with songs and recitations were much appreciated. Cards and dancing followed by light refreshments ended tho evening.
A returned soldiers' concert, to assist Pto. A. W. Phillips, of the 13th Battalion, who has lost his arm, was given at Mosman Town Hall on Wednesday. Sergeant Barton, D.C.M., arranged the programme, and assisted Mrs. H. L M'Donald In getting up the entertain- ment. Some of those, contributing to tho pro- gramme .were Miss Hislop, Sapper F. G. Pack- man, Sergeant Barton, Mr. Les (Williams, and Mr. Len. M'Carthy. Swocts wero sold during the evening, and a substantial sum was rea- lised. Mr. H, L. M'Donald acted as trea-
surer.
A general meeting of the Australian Pio- neers', Battalion Comforts Fund was held on Tuesday at the depot, 10 Castlcrcagb strcet. As the majority of these battalions was formed In Egypt, it Is, . as yet, quito impossible to obtain the names and addresses of tho next-of-kin. Tboso interested aro ashed to send in tholr names and addresses as soon as possible to tho bon. secretary, 10 Cnsttercagh-slrcst. A lotter from Mr. Budden was read, asking for warm clothing of evory description. To meet this request workers and funds are urgently ncedod. Christmas bllllca will bo ready shortly for salo at the depot. A euchre tourament and gift after- noon, promoted by Mrs. E. Hassall, was hold at tho depot, 10 Castlcroagh-streot, yester-
day afternoon.
The Kogarah Ladles' Working League for Soldiers held a successful invitation social In tho local School of Arts on Saturday. Guess- ing-competitions were held and sweets an.l refreshments sold, realising over 11 guineas. The prizes for the recent sock competition were awarded to Mrs. H. Smith (Tom Ugly's Point) and Mrs. Weatherall (Randwick).
A committee meeting of the 13th and 45th Battalion ComfortH Fund was hold at tho depot. Manning-chambers, on Wodnesday, The quarterly balance-sheot, audited by Mr. A. J. Brierley, showed tho recolpts to Juno 30 to bo £440 7s lid; the expenditure waa £287/l«B 4d, the principal items being food Bturfs and woollon gooda. Tho balanco waa £152 11s 7d. Arrangements were mado for Christmas billies. This committee has been working since August, 1015, when Mrs. T. Henley, who still holds office, was unani- mously elected president. At St. Mark's Chu-ch, Granville on May 19, the Rev. A. E. J. Ross, M.A., officiated at tho marriage of May, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and MrSj W. J. Wilson, of Yass, with John Archibald Elliott, third son of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Campbell, of Tenterfield. The bride was given away by Mr. W. L. Flower, of Granville She wore a trained gown of ivory crepe do Chino draped with silk lace and orange blossoms. Her tullo veil was arranged beneath a circlet of orange bloneomB, and her bouquet was composed of white Bweot-poaB and asparagus fern.' Miss Ruby Wilson (niece) acted as bridesmaid. She wore n frock of wlilto silk, with guipure trimmings and pink streamers, and a tulle cap. Her bouquet waB of pink sweot-peas. Misa Ruby Ross acted as Irnln-bearcr, wearing n frock of white voile, trimmed with Malines lace and lusertion. She carried a dainty batket of pink sweet-peas. Mr. Victor E. Ross acted ns best man. The bridegrooms' gift to tho bridesmaid was a gold brooch set with rubios and pearls, and to the train-bearer a gold onhle hanglo. A reception wa« held in the local Town Hall. On July 20 St. Phillips Church, Church Hill, Sydney, waa adorned with palms and arum liles for the marriage of Lieutenant Travers Longfield Brett, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Brett, of Cheltenham, to Essie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Mutton. Leeholme, Roseville. The Rev. Canon Bellingham, M.A., officiated. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a gown of ivory soft satin, the corsage of nlnon was mounted on shell pink ninon, with finishings of rose point lace, the double skirt being finished with tiny ninon roses, and the train lined with shell pink ninon frills, finished with touches of orange blossom. The embroldored veil was worn with a tiny wreath of orange blossom. Her bouquet was tied with the colours of tho 4th Battalion. Tho bridegroom's gift was silver toilet requisites. Tho bridesmaids were Misses Grace Brett (sister of the bridegroom), Miss Lily Perry (Ingleburn), Misses Marcia and Vivien Mutton (sisters of the bride), all wearing frocks of pale pink, veiled with silk net over-slips, with pink satin strappings, the skirts being finished with posies of daisies. Their bouquets wore of pale pink sweet peas, and tulle butterfly bows were worn in their hair. Lieutenant Lambert Mackenzie acted as best man, and Lieutenant Essex and Lieutenant Mackay as groomsmen. A reception was held at the Wentworth Hotel, The bride's brother, Lance-Corporal Oswald F. Mutton, is at present on active service. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Brett, Mr. and Mrs. S. Redshaw, Lieutenant and Mrs. W. K. McLean, Lieut. and Mrs. Browne, Mr. Eric Mutton, Mrs. Outrim Anderson, Lieuts. Roberts, Malone, Young, Rev. L. J. M'Donald (Lindfield), and Canon Bellingham, M.A. The officers of the 4th Battalion presented Lieut. Travers Brett with a silver set of dishes. Lieut, and Mrs. Brett left for the Mountains, the bride travelling in a smart suit or khaki gabardine, with a close fitting hat of white
moire.
At Yarra Bay, the residence of the bride's parents, on July 5, James William, son of the late J. P. Mitchell, of Stanmore, and Nellie Blake, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dennis, late of Pyrmont, were married, the Rev. Albert J. Carter officiating. The bride, who was given away by her father, was ilrosBcd In Avhlto vollo, trimmed wjth Itulpuro lace..
