VOTING SYSTEM.
PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION
An exposition of the mechanism and value of an improved method of voting the single transferable vote was given on Saturday evening at London House, 97 Elizabeth street, by Mr. John H. Humphreys, secre- tary of the Proportional Representation Society of Great Britain. The large num-
ber of questions asked and answered kept the audience interested to a late hour, whilst the discussion was kept at a high level by Mr. Ashworth, author of "Proportional Representation and Party Politics," by Mr. Renwick, who was in the chair, and others. The lecturer declared that the present system deprived large numbers of citizens of repre- sentation, and stated that this practical dis- franchisement was responsible for the grow- ing indifference to Parliament which was noticeable among many business men. In Adelaide he had found that all the 15 seats in the South Australian Parliament allotted
to the metropolitan area were held by mem-
bers of one party. The new method would have given to the minority their fair share. Mr. Humphreys will give a further address to-morrow evening in the Old Council Cham- ber, Town Hall, on "Proportional Represen- tation and a National Parliament," when the Lord Mayor will preside. Questions are again invited.
