The first two selected candidates on Vaucluse Council, Henry CHRISTISON and Edwin SAUTELLE, were brothers-in-law, Sautelle having married Henry's sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) in 1895. Sautelle was secretary of the South Head Cemetery Trust.

THE POLLING.

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

APATHETIC ELECTORS.

Saturday witnessed the triennial appeal to the electors of shires and municipalities.

All over the State the elections were held, but although there was more interest manifested in the polling than heretofore, the great body of electors remained apathetic, and when the final statistics are tabulated it will probably be found that barely 50 per cent. troubled to exercise the franchise.

A different Act governs the election of aldermen for the City Council, but the by- election to fill the seat of Alderman A. A. Cocks for Lang was held. It was an interest- ing contest, Mr. Brunton beating Sir Allen Taylor by over a hundred votes, but the usual apathy resulted in only 1350 electors voting out of an enrolment of 3200.

The most strenuous Labour attack was made in Paddington. Last election the Lab- our candidates were routed. This time, though a candidate was nominated for each seat, only three of the twelve succeeded, the lower ward being completely captured by Labour. Six of the retiring aldermen were defeated, including Mr. D. F. Dwyer, the only pledged Labour man in the last council, and the man who ran Mr. W. F. Latimer within 50 votes at the recent Parliamentary general election for Woollahra.

North Sydney provided, perhaps, the most interesting contest outside the city by-elec- tion. A big movement to oust the whole of the sitting aldermen except one (Alderman Whatmore) was started by what was called the Reform party. The chief planks in this party's platform were the securing of an elec-

tric supply for the suburb from the City Council, the better expenditure of moneys, alleviation of the dust nuisance, and a stricter supervision of the Sanitary Depart-

ment. However, even these promised im- provements were not sufficient to gain the party a very great number of seats. Mr. F. Cowdroy, who opposed the Liberal leader in the recent State elections, and Mr. Peter Simpson, were the only two of the 13 en- dorsed candidates to be returned. The rate- payers recognised that a change of personnel was necessary, and only six of the old alder- men were re-elected. The seven who secured election outside the Reform Party's influence were in most cases supported by progress associations in various parts of the suburb.

Following are the results of the elections. An asterisk denotes a member of the last council:—
