This part of the ceremony the Mayoress car- ried out amid cheers and much good humour.
The Mayor outlined the great progress Glebe wns making. They now had their principal streets lighted by electricity, and
had rrranged with the gas company for an ยก
improved lighting Borvlco.
Alderman Colo thought the Glebe did the right thing to continue both tho gas and tho electric light. They would bo able to see which worked the best, and which ought In a few years to be continued. (Applause.) Glebe was tho only borough as fnr as he 1 now that had adopted that system.
The Lord Mayor congratulated tho Mayoress on switching on a light that he waB convinc- ed would be of great service to the municip- ality, and would improve as time went on. Ho had nothing to say against the gas company. It had done- splendid work in supplying light aril power to tho people of Sydney and sub-
urbs, and there was ample work for the com- I pany still to do. (Applause.) But the com- pany had opposition in the City Council, and that council intended to make Itself felt In
the supply of light and motive power In the ? metropolis, and Glebe and other municipali- ties would get the benefit. (Applause.)
Alderman Lucas proposod "Tho Electric Lighting Department of the City."
The town clerk (Mr. T. Nesbitt) responded. The electrical engineer also responded.
