Cyril Gove, jockey & footballer, but notably no reference to him boxing that night (adding to evidence that the boxing story oft associated with this day is an untrue one)

SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

SOME CLOSE FINISHES.

NOTES BY OBSERVER.

The sixth round of matches played on Saturday produced some interesting contests, and there were some surprises. In one match a player was re- ported for striking another, and in at least one other game flagrant misbehaviour escaped the notice of the officials. An interesting incident in the day's play was the appearance of Cyril Gove, of Essendon, who had earlier in the afternoon ridden Menthe into third place in the Springbank Corinthian Handicap at Moonee Valley. The race did not start till 2 o'clock, and as soon as it was over, and he had weighed in, Gove took off his racing jacket and jumped into a motor-car. He reached the East Melbourne Cricket-ground in time to don the red and black guernsey of Essendon, and by 3 o'clock was in the field playing foot-   ball.
