ACRAMENTAL AVINES, AND THE HOLY
COMMUNION.
As the question of unfermented wines for Sacramental purposes is now occupying considerable attention, both in the Old and New World, we have much pleasure in reproducing the following fiom the NATIONAL TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE, of New York, for last month.-" 80CIAL REFORMER."
Wino in the Cluster.-Mis. E. J. Richmond says :-" A va&t amount of discussion has taken place in rcgaid to WINE ; some, like the immortal Shakespeare, calling it ' DEVIL,' and others stjling it 'A BLESSING,' and one of tb. ' GOOD GIFTS of GOD.' More pel plcxing still, the BIBLE itself utters repeated warnings against v,ine as a MOCKER, and strong drink as RAGING. It also denounces 'WOE to them that drink wine,* and to ' him that puttcth the bottle to his neighbour's LIPS/ YET, THIS SAME BOOK tells us of the miracle in ' Cana, of
Galileo.' "
" The only reasonable solution of the matter is this, viz. :-The unspoded juice of the grape, the 'WINE IN THE CLUSTER,' is the'NEW WINE,'of which the same book says 'A BLES- SING l8 IN IT.' It is monstrous to suppose that tho LORD OF LIFE would CREATE a beverage which HIS WORD forbids Hil people even to LOOK UPON ; that the DIVINE ONE, who loves His own with a love which not even death can quench, should change the puro sweet water into ' THE POISON OF DRAGONS. AND THE VENOM OF ASPS.' Only the process of decay and death is the signal for the DEADLY ALCOHOL to enter the NEW WINE, and change it fiom a ' BLESSING,' to a CURSE."
" It chances now and then that even the pure life-giving atmos- phere becomes the instrument of death. Only close the room tightly, filled with good air. and place a pan of burning choreo»! within. No change is VISIBLE, yet the deadly gas would speedily destroy life. The« entrance, however, of ALCOHOL into GOOD WINE is a thousandfold more deadly and disastrous.'1
PROHIBITION AND THE LORD'S SUPPER.-Rev. J. E. Gilbert, of Milwaukee, in writing to the Topcka Capitol about the recent discussion in relation to the effects ot the piohibitorv law of Kansas, says :
"The assumption that fermented wine is necessary to the sacrament must be regarded with surprise. Ii that kind of wine must be used at the Lord's table, who shall forbid it at any other table T Then must we not immediately chango front on the tem- perance question, and admit that suoh wines may be used mode- rately, even with the example and command of Jesus ! Having reached that conclusion, who shall pnuse this side that awful pre- cipice over which multitudes plunge into drunkards' graves! The only safety ties in a denial of the dangerous assumption. Alco-
holic wine used incommemorating the death of Christ ! Themost violent of all poisons, the great disturber of domestio and publicpeacc, an emblem of the blood shed for tho remission of sin t PREPOSTEROUS AND BLASPHEMOUS t-Who can show that the wine used by Jesus was fermented T Who can show that these can be proved, who will affirm that we are obligated to use we have now any such wine as was then employed? But, if both the samo now, even with the ravages of strong drink on every side J In .the city or -Cincinnati years ago the wife ot a prominent citizen was addicted to the use of ardent sririts. She sold furn!« ture, clothing, and food for liquor. She was at last converted/ reformed, and added to the Church. She continued steadfast until, on communion day, she was given fermented wine, and then went donn to her old mode of life. Who will justify the ad
of that minister 1"
The above news-from both ENGLAND and AMERICA is almost a repetition of what has lately been expressed in New SouU Wales on the MONSTROSITY of using tho DRUNKARD'S DRINK on the Lord's table. Sooner or later the partakers ol such TILE COMPOUNDS will have to render an account bofo« a tribunal which they can neither AWE nor BRIBE, and which has forshadowed its judgment as follows, viz. : "Of how much sorer punishment shall ho be thought worthy who bath counted the blood ol tho covenant an UNHOLY THING." The cursed DRLNK that caused poor Buckley's death is the same thing in REALITY as is used by most communicants in Sydney at thi
Lord's table on Sundays.
