VICTORIA.
MELBOURNE, TUESDAY. I
I The outgoing mail will take a formal invitation to | H.R.H. the Prince of Wale3 to open the Exhibition.
The balloon accident yesterday was caused by the inexperience of the aeronaut, in not allowing for the great expansion of gas consequent upon his rapid ascent. He had clutched the valve-rope to pull it, to allow the gas to escape, when he heard an explosion. Ho thought of jumping out, but found that tho parachute carne into play. JTo doubt the parachute
saved his Ufe.
Hiera was a larae catherina: of Su_J_v._eihao2,
children to-day, in the Town Hall, the building being crowded. The Bishop of Melbourne preached <
sermon.
Great complaints are made at the Hospital at thi non-attendance of the honorary staff, and it was shown that one doctor had not attended his patients for Vwa months. Yesterday he sent in his resignation.
To-day was observed as a holiday in the Govern«,
ment offices.
The weather ha3 cleared, and is now beautifully
fine.
