GIFT
Millard Dead
HAMILTON, Friday.—William Mil- lard, winner or the first Stawell Gift foot race, held in 1878, died to-day at the Hamilton Public Hospital. He was aged 84 years.
Mr. Millard, who was a farmer at Condah, was married twice, and was the father of 22 children. For more than 40 years he took a leading part in pro- fessional athletics, and over a period of 11 years won many races.
In 1889 he won the 220 yards race at Stawell, was third in the Stawell Handi- cap and qualified for the final of the Easter Gift, in which he gained fourth place.
The funeral will be held at Condah
to-morrow.
