Jumper
Specially designed for "The Argus"
MATERIALS REQUIRED- 5oz "Sun- beam" Super 2-ply wool; a small quantity of contrasting colour; a pair No 9 and pair No. 12 needles, a coarse steel crochet
hook
MEASUREMENTS -Width all round at underarm, 32in, length from top of shoulder, 22in, length of sleeve underarm, 5½in.
TENSION-2 patterns to 2 1/2 in. Stock- ing st, 8 sts to 1 in.
PATTERN-1st Row-K 4, *m 1, k 2 tog, k 1, pull the 4th, 5th, and 6th sts on left-hand needle one by one over the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sts, in a group, m 1, k 1, m 1, k 2, m 1 k3. Repeat from * until 4 sts remain, then m 1, k 2 tog, k 2.
2nd Row-K 4, *m 1, k 2 tog, k 1, p 6, k 3, repeat from * until 4 sts remain, then m 1, k 2 tog, k 2.
3rd Row- K 4, *m 1, k 2 tog, k 10, repeat from * until 4 sts remain, then m 1, k 2 tog, k 2.
4th Row - Same as 2nd row. 5th Row- Same as 3rd row 6th Row - Same as 2nd row.
BACK AND FRONT ALIKE- Using No 9 needles commence at the lower edge by casting on 128 sts. Knit one row into the back of sts to produce a firm edge. Work the slx pattern rows 8 times, then the 1st and 2nd rows of pattern. Change to No. 12 needles and knit in rib of k 1, p 1, for 22 rows, then change back to No. 9 needles and work 13 patterns. To shape
armhole -
1st Row -Cast off 6 sts, k 1, pull 3 over 3, work in pattern lo the end of row
2nd Row -Cast off 6 sts, k 1, p 6, k 3, continue in pattern to end of row, ending
with k 1 instead of k 3.
3rd Row -Cast off 6 sts, k 4, m 1, k 2 tog. continue in pattern to end of row. ending with k 8.
4th Row-Cast off 6 sts, k 4, m 1, k 2 tog. continue in pattern to end of row.
Without further shaping complete this pattern. Work 6 more, then the 1st and 2nd rows of pattern. Cast off.
THE SLEEVES AND YOKE -These are worked in one piece commencing at the
bottom of sleeve.
Cast on 120 sts on No 9 needles. Work in stocking st for 5 in. then cast off 3 sts at the beginning of every row until the sts number 57, ending with a purl row.
Next Row -K 28, knit twice into the
next st. k 28. Continue in stocking st,
increaslng in the centre st of every 4th row till sts number 66, then 3 more rows.
Next Row -K 10, cast off 32, k 24. On the last 24 sts work 33 rows. Break off wool and knit on the 10 sts that were left for 33 rows.
Next Row -K 10, cast on 32, k 24. Decrease in the centre sts of every 4th row until sts number 57. Cast on 3 sts at the beginning of every row until sts again number 120. Work 5 in. in stocking st. Cast off.
CUFF- Cast on 74 sts on No 9 needles and knit in stocking st for 20 rows.
FLOWERS- Commence with 3 ch. Join into a ring.
1st Row-Six ch 1 tr into ring. 3 ch and 1 tr three times into same ring- 3 ch join.
2nd Row- 4 ch and 1 dc into each space of previous row.
3rd and 4th Rows.-1 dc, 7 d tr into each space, finish with 1 dc. With contrasting wool fill in centres in bullion st.
TO MAKE UP- Press the pattern very lightly, press stocking st with a damp cloth and hot iron. Fold cuffs double and gather the bottoms of sleeves into them. Sew curved part of sleeve into armhole and the straight edge into top of front and back. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Crochet a picot edge round neck and attach flowers.
The jumper is designed to be worn with a bloused effect above the waist, but if the straight effect is preferred the number of pattern rows between the waist and the underarm should be reduced accordingly.
