QUEENSLAND'S EARL TO WED

Licence to Marry

Actress

EXPECTED TO RETURN

TO WARWICK

The Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, according to a cabled report from London, has secured a licence at the Central London Church to marry Mimi Forde Pigott, a pretty blonde actress and dancer, who has appeared in many comedies and revues under the stage name of Mimi Crawford. Miss Pigott lives with her mother at Highgate Hill, London. She is a niece of Lord Chalmers, a former governor of Ceylon.

It will be recalled that the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and Captain

W. E. McColm

came to Queens- land about six years ago, and went into part- nerships in the well-known estate of North Tool- burra, near Warwick. Cap- tain McColm is a retired naval of- ficer, and he and the young Earl, who is now aged 28 years, soon be- came popular

figures in the district. Captain McColm took a keen interest in the public institutions, and became chairman of the Allora Shire Council.

RODE IN COMPETITIONS.

The Earl of Suffolk plays an excel- lent game of golf, and was often on the Warwick Golf Club links. He be- came a keen horseman, too, and took part in bending races on horseback and other riding events in the show competitions in Warwick.

He is a tall, athletic figure, wears a small black moustache, and is de- scribed as "a good mixer." He made many friends among the young people of Warwick, and, although he was not a clubman, nor a member of the local associations, entered freely into the life on the land, and those sports that are part and parcel of life outback.

The Earl left Queensland last spring, and is expected to return with his bride to North Toolburra.

The Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire was bom on March 2, 1908, and suc- ceeded to the title in 1917. The Earl- dom dates back more than 300 years. In the ancestral home is a celebrated picture gallery containing a famous collection of the works of old masters.

CAPTAIN McCOLM SURPRISED.

Captain McColm arrived in Brisbane from Warwick yesterday, accompanied by his son, Mr. Malcolm McColm.

Both were much surprised last night when they were shown the Press cable announcing that the Earl of Suffolk had taken out a licence to marry Miss Pigott, whom they knew by the stage name of Mimi Crawford. They had not heard of the romance in any way, and were expecting the Earl to return at an early date.

"The Earl accompanied Mrs. McColm and my son to England last year," said Captain M'Colm, "and was to have returned with them. He was unable, however, to do this owing to the serious illness of his mother, whom the Earl accompanied recently to Am- erica. He stayed with his mother in Florida for a while, then returned to the Continent. We hope to see him back in Queensland soon. I know Miss Pigott as Mimi Crawford. She would be about the same age as the Earl."

"I met Miss Mimi Crawford just recently, when I was in London," said Mr. Malcolm McColm. "She is un-   doubtedly a pretty blonde of medium height and attractive personality. She was with her uncle, Lord Chalmers, at the time."

NOT FOLLOWING CUSTOM.

Although the Earl of Suffolk owns a fine old ancestral home in England, most of his interests are in America. His mother was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Levi Z. Leiter, a wealthy American, and was an ac- knowledged American beauty.

The usual place for the weddings of the Earls of Suffolk is the church at the ancestral home. The wedding at the Central Church in London is a departure from custom.
