FRESH LAURELS

ROBERTSON'S RIVAL RUNNING IN AMERICA

(By Tape.)

Austin Robertson, hero of the last Australian professional championships, Is fa America seeking fresh laurels, but, according to tho cablegram published in The Courier-Mall, he is suffering from an Injured tendon, which may or may not bo serious. He Is confident that It will respond to treatment, and all Australians

will hope so.

The name Tolan la mentioned In the cablegram as his first prospective oppon- ent, and he Is a class runner, although

¡Is stated best time for 100 yards, 10 3-5 seconds, Is nothing wonderful, viewed In the light of figures only.. Parker, Miles, Banner, and all the old-time sprinters that one best knew, M'Garrlgal, Postle, Donaldson, Todd, and others, did better than that. But Eddie Tolan cnly 24 years of age, has much of his running life before him, and In fact there Is very little of It behind him. Ho was ona of the stars of the Los Angeles games last year, winning both the 100 metres and

200 metres races.

It Is In the real professional tests that a man's standards can be measured, for whUe not one word Is said In reproach of amateur Ideals and figures, there Is often that Indefinable something that makes a champion amateur somerning less In rating than a champion profes- sional, and the reason may be found In the manner of training, for as a rule amateurs have no professional aids In that respect, excepting In America.

MATCH IN OCTOBER.

The match Is supposed to come off at the Chicago Pair In October, so there Is plenty of time for Robinson's leg to come right Tolan was declared to be a professional some time ago, and what- ever protests he might have made against the supreme authority of the Amateur Athletic Union he weakened them through his subsequent appearance on the pro-

fessional stsge.

,Tolan Is one of the three best runners In America, and In that land of big Ideas It Is only In keeping with such a doctrine there, in sport at least, that they are the best In the world. The other two runners are Ralph Metcalfe and Jes- sie Owens, the latter being the nation's hope In the 1936 Olympic Games. Tolan stands Sft 41n In his socks, and weighs about 10 stone. Metcalfe, who Is 22 years of ape, Is regarded as the runner with the greatest prospects of the three.

Tile matches to come may work up to world's tests, and Australians may see the best of the world's runners In open

contests later.
