HOW SKIPTON GOT. ITS NAME It was originally intended that Skipton should race under the name of Monaco. Mrs. Kitson, his owner, when visiting Monte Carlo while on.a world tour, was so favorably im pressed by Monaco that she resolved to call her next racehorse after the protectorate. She actually applied for the name, but as the Vichy government, which protects Monaco, was anti-British, she thought it might not seem the right thing to adopt such a title, and she withdrew the application. Several other names were proposed and discarded until finally she de cided upon Skipton, which is the name of a small country .town near Bal larat. "This, town", says Mrs., Kit son, "is a pretty little place with a river and overhanging willows".
