GRASSHOPPER PLAGUE
KATAMATITE. Monday. - Grasshop-
pers have made their appearance here, con-
suming any green herbage. The swarms are
about half a mile wide, and are taking a
south-westerly course. Harvest operations are in full swing. The first load of new wheat arrived at the local station to-day. The sample is fair.
MITIAMO, Monday. - Grasshoppers passed through here in millions on Satur- day and Sunday. Owing to the grass and crops, &c., being dry, they did not remain here, only a few of the late-sown crops and flower gardens suffering. They appeared to be making south-west.
NATHALIA. Monday. - The grasshoppers are doing a great amount of harm among the vineyards and gardens in this district. Several vine crops have been completely de- stroyed. Mr. James Davis, who has a vine- yard of 16 acres, and estimated his grape crop at 2,000 cases, says that all is gone, and
that there is not a vestige of green to be seen. Several gardens have also been com- pletely stripped.
ROCHESTER. Monday. - Grasshoppers
have been invading the town in myriads during the past few days. Fortunately, the crops are too far advanced for the grass-
hoppers to do much damage, although in some cases they are eating off the heads. Hardly a vestige of anything green has been
left untouched. Paddocks of lucerne and amber cane have been stripped, and gardens
that were rich in foliage less than a week ago are now almost bare.
