Accident. — Mr. Collins, the now licensee of the Globe Hotel, Corowa, was the victim of a painful accident on Friday morning. He was working in the bar, and forgetting that the trap-door leading to the cellar was open, he had a fall to the bottom.

He sustained a dislocated shoulder and other injuries, and has since been under medical attention. Some weeks will elapse before he will have full use of his arm — the left one — again. Corowa Race Club. — The Eiverina National Brush Hurdle Race meeting of the club, which is listed for Satur day, 4th September, gives every in dication of being an outstanding suc cess. The secretary (Mr. Frank Gal braith) states that, although entries do not close until the 25 th inst., many horses have already been booked up. The recent rains have had a most beneficial effect on the track and en closure generally. Returned Soldiers. — A good deal of business was transacted- at the monthly meeting of the local sub-branch of tho R.S.S.I.L.A: The president (Mr. E. Harrison) occupied the chair. A let ter read amongst outward correspond ence was addressed to Mr. T. C. Morris (ex-sergeant of police), congratulating him on having had the Imperial Ser vice Order conferred by His Majesty the King for meritorious services ren dered. A letter was read from the Ganmain branch asking that the local branch support the appointment of re turned soldiers to 'positions as agents in charge of Government grain ele vators during the coming season. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Minister for Agriculture object ing to the .appointment of other than returned soldiers to such positions. It was decided to make the' Poppy Day appeal on ll^h';-Noyeniber, and the secretary was authorised to order the requisite number of poppies and badges of remembrance. Two new mem bers, Messrs. Collins (Globe Hotel) uud Prichard (Terminus Hotel), were ac corded welcomes by the president. A suggestion that the annual ball be again held was discussed, but the general opinion of members was that it was now too late in the season to organise such a function for this .year, and it was decided to consider the proposal next year. The secretary re ported that there were now 37 branches in the Riverina section of the association, and that iCorowa, ? with 72 members, was third on the list. High School Library.— As the result of a social, the second year girls — headed by Misses Norina -Marti, Kitty King, Madge and Joyce Dale — a sum of £l/i8/ was realised, and this was handed over. to the funds. As a re sult of other suggestions from the girls, it is expected that a number of good books will be added to the library in the near future. Golf.— Mid-week play of the asso ciates of tho .Corowa club consisted of play for the August medal concur rently with the fourth round of the Wangamong shield. The medal was won by Mrs. H.' L. Watson, ex inanagor of the local branch of tho Bank of Australasia, who entered ths local hospital about two months ago for the purpose of undergoing an operation for appendicitis, is experi encing a rather bad time. Recently, a second operation had - to be perform ed, for the removal of a rib.. Mr. Wat son expects to be able to return to his home in the near future to con valesce.— Mr. S. W. Chandler, mine host of Hotel Australia, is about to enjoy a holiday cruise to Fiji. — Miss. Alice Conrdy, of 'Erigle,' Lowes dale, whose marriage with Mr. Win. Nunan will take place in Melbourne in October next, and Miss Eileen Ron' roy, who is also taking her departure from the district to reside in Mel bourne, were entertained by their friends at an afternoon tea party at 'Erigle,' Lowesdalo, on Thursday afternoon. — Mr. Hugh Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Brown, of ' Muy field,' Bungowannah, has been ap

Love ridge, of Corowa, and Mr. Frank Tay lor, of Narandera, and formerly of Corowa. _ Death of Old- District Resident. — The death took place at her residence, Parade Place, Corowa, of Mrs. Martha Lent, relict of the late Henry Lent (who died about two years ago), at the age of 74 years. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr—and Mrs. Todd, of Melbourne, and was mar ried at Adelbng to Mr. Alf. Ma'ddeu, who was killed in a mining fatality at the Prentice United Mine, Ruther glen, on May 28, 1899. There were ? three children of the union, two daugh: ? ters and one son, all of whom sur vive. They are Mesdames R. Ash and \ S. T. Gallagher, of Corowa, and Mr Sid Madden, of Melbourne. Boy Scouts' Birthday.— The fifth anniversary of the reforming of the last Corowa ; Troop of Boy Scouts was celebrated at the Oddfellows' Hall, when .there was a large gathering of parents and others interested in the movement. In addition to Scouts the Cubs and Girl Guides' took part. A diversified programme of skits, choruses, gaines and musical items was gone through by the Scouts, who had been prepared for the occasion by: the Assistant Scoutmaster, , the Rev. A. E. Frede. Commissioner Brown, of ; Albury, was present and showed a series of lantern slides depicting tho varying phases of Scout work, -from the raw material to the Boy' 'Seoul. Mr.' Harold Dp la Rue has .been appointed to the vacant position of hon: secre tary. ? :. Further Rain.— Showers which fell on ' .
