OBITUARY
The death of Mrs. Sarah Chegwod- den, 73, of Benalla, occurred at the Wangaratta Base Hospital. The death occurred at the Wan garatta District Hospital of Mr. Ed- ward McLaughlin, 72 years of age, a resident of Euroa. His remains were interred at Wangaratta.
Mrs. Martha Frances Thornton, 23, who comes from Goulburn, died in Albury District Hospital. She had been in hospital since April 7. Apart from her husband, Mr. R. Thornton, deceased is survived by a young child. Mr. William Culvert Skein, aged 59, died at his residence, Batlow. De- ceased was born in Victoria and came to Batlow at a very early age with his parents and resided there practi- cally ever since, following the occupa- tions of miner and laborer. He mar- ried Miss A. E. Morton, of Wagga, and the family is Percy, Isabel, George, Leslie, Claude and Olive. Mr. John McLeod, aged 85 years, an old identity of Wagga, died in the Harden Hospital. He was a native of Wagga and left the town about 12 years ago to reside in Harden. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters — Messrs. Alick and John McLeod (Sydney), Mrs. E. Hop- Irins (Wagga), Mrs. E. J. King (Har- den), and Mrs. Ticehurst (Sydney). Mr. Paul Elton Pringle, a well- known resident of Chiltern, died at Wangaratta District Base Hospital on Friday night. He was unmarried, and is survived by one brother, Mr. Wil- liam Pringle, and one sister, Miss
Florence Pringle, of Chiltern. Mrs. James Larkings, sen., of Wangaratta, is a step-sister. The funeral took place on Saturday at Chiltern cemetery. Mr. Paul Elton Pringle, a well- known resident of Chiltern, died at the Wangaratta District Base Hospital. Mr. Pringle was as a young man a well-known footballer, having played with the Chiltern team. He was un- married, and is survived by one brother, Mr. William Pringle, and one sister, Miss Florence Pringle, of Chil- tern. Mrs. James Larkings, snr., of Wangaratta, is a step-sister. The death occurred on Monday at the home of her son (Mr. Aubrey Laver), at Cotswood, Crookwell, of Mrs. Stephen Laver, wife of Mr. Stephen Laver, of Tatong, Frogmore. Mrs. Laver was the daughter, of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Colclough, of Tatong, Benalla. Some years ago she joined the Country Women's As- sociation, of which she was a vice-pre- sident and a member of the executive. Sir Richard Stawell, president-elect of the British Medical Association, and one of the greatest physicians in the Commonwealth, died at Melbourne. A month before Sir Richard Stawell had suffered a seizure and had collapsed at a meeting of the committee of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. A brief service at the Fawkner Crematorium was conducted by Archbishop Head in the presence of members of the family and intimate friends. Mr. Edward Egbert Welby, 89, widower, died in an Albury private hospital. Born at Sutton Forest, N.S.W., deceased was one of a well- known English family. His cousins were Lord Welby, Sir Edgar Welby and Bishop Welby. His great-grand- father was at one time Lord Primate of Ireland, and his grandfather, the Rev. Stone, was chaplain at an early Australian convict settlement. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. C. Clynch, Pennant Hills, Sydney, survives him. Mr. Welby resided at Lavington for the past few years. An old identity of the Corryong district, Mrs. Thorne, passed away in the Corryong Hospital on Wednesday last. The deceased lady, who was 91 years of age, was born in London and came to Australia when a child. Most of her life had been spent in the Cudgewa district. Her husband pre- deceased her 25 years ago. Of her family of four sons and seven daugh- ters, three sons and three daughters survive. There are also 20 grandchild- dren and 28 great grandchildren. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Cudgewa cemetery.
The death has occurred of Mrs. Johanna Hayes, relict of the late Michael Hayes, and an old and esteem- ed resident of Chiltern. She was 81 years of age, and a resident of the district for 79 years. She left Syd- ney with her parents, who settled in Beechworth for a brief period, subse- quently making Chiltern their home. Her father was the late Thomas En- right. She is survived by five sons — Maurice, Thomas, Michael, John and William, and one daughter (Mrs. K. Brewer, Sydney). Mrs. T. Nicholson, and Miss E. Enright are sisters.
