WILLIAM THWAITES

To the editor of the Argus

Sir, _As an humble admirer of the great man, from an association official and other-

wise since the inception o the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, I ven- ture to submit a suggestion to the citizens

of the metropolitan area that special recog-   nition should be made of the great ser-   vices rendered by him in connection with the stupendous work of the sewerage of     Melbourne and suburbs, now almost com-

pleted. Had he been spared for about two     years longer his triumph would have been complete and he would have been able to rest on his well-earned laurels. As it is,     all the main sewers have been laid, and what     remain incomplete can be finished by his able lieutenants, Messrs. Oliver and Kuss- maul. That the board has suffered a severe loss must be admitted, but the loss of such a brilliant man, in the prime of life, to the   Commonwealth is irreparable. To those ac- quainted with his habits, it is well known that he shortened hos life by incessant labour in the service of the public, and a   monument to his fame and marvellous suc-     cess as an Australian engineer should be erected in close proximity to that of his late

chief, E. G. Fitzgibbon. - Yours, &c.,

EDWARD DILLON.

Camberwell, Nov. 23.
