    Public

Chinese established stores, and other businesses such as boarding houses, cookshops, grog shops and gambling houses, to service the needs of their fellow Chinese in Sydney and on the goldfields.

Stores told food stuffs and necessary everyday items and provided services such as letter writing and sending money home to China.

After the goldrushes, many country towns still had a Chinese store or two well into the 20th century, while in Sydney businesses included large import-export firms, cabinetmaking factories, laundries and cafes and restaurants.
