The Australian Postal Institute (API) was established in 1918 in Victoria and 1921 in New South Wales in 1921 and was established in all States by 192x. The Institute caters for the well being of postal servants in both Recreational needs and Career advancements. The API rendered valuable assistance in the training of officers for higher positions. It also coaches them for all postal examinations, both at the Institute training centres and in the case of country students, by post.

1919 - API Mr. Webster, the Postmaster-General, is following the example of the New South Wales Railway Commissioners in the matter of employees' education. The first branch postal institute has been established in Melbourne. It will provide facilities for the social enjoyment of members and for their education on lines which will tend to increase their efficiency as servants of the department. The whole success of the API scheme must be judged from the educational aspect, if the institute merely served a social purpose it would hardly be worth official recognition. The chief officers of the Postal Department have more than once spoken of the necessity of providing facilities for the junior employees to improve their general education, and also to attend classes in subjects which are associated with their work.

1919 - A series of short local event articles including this on the API -- A "Dreamer of Dreams" The Postmaster-General, when He is not courting the muses, is a dreamer of dreams, and every dream is a postal institute (says the "Age"). Mr. Webster has established an institute in Melbourne, and is now seeking to do the same for the other states. Speaking on the matter at the annual meeting of the Postal Institute, Mr. Webster entered upon a regular orgy of prospective expenditure. He said he wanted an institute in every state. In Perth the building which was to house the Perth institute was approaching completion. Plans for another building for the Sydney institute had been ready for some time, and the same could be said of Brisbane. All he wanted was authority from the Treasurer to go ahead, but that official was strangely unenthusiastic. "I save them money and make money for them," said Mr. Webster, "but it's as hard as the devil to get anything out of them." There was a great deal of laughter at the Postmaster-General's joke, but it seems rather a serious matter that in times like these a Minister should be pounding at the door of the Treasury to secure money for unnecessary and wasteful projects. Mr. Webster spoke in prose throughout. Corrected

The following has been added to "Comments".
The A.P.O. was the national journal of the Australian Postal Institute (A.P.I.) and was issued from the mid to late 1950s to the early 1970s (checking for actual dates). The A.P.O. journal included a separate "State Insert" for each State for their activities (of about 12 pages).
The A.P.O. journal was only produced in the period of the P.M.G. Department. The A.P.O. A.P.I. Journal was never published by Telecom (from 1975) or by Telstra (from 1995).
On July 1, 1975 the Australian Postal Institute changed it name to the Australian Post-Tel Institute to reflect its members base within Australia Post (Post) and Telecom (Tel) to reflect the new identities (which replaced the P.M.G on the 1st July 1975).
