    Fowl feathers for women's hats

Feathers of South Australian poultry may soon be worn in milady's hat.

rpHE Windsor Poultry Service A has sent samples of hackle.

wing, and tail feathers to a Sydney milliner. The proprietor (Mr. Thomas) said his service was already sending large quantities of fowl body feathers for treatment in Melbourne before they went to bedding manufacturers. The feathers were first washed and steam-dried in Adelaide. Mr. Thomas said, 'We sell the down from the breasts of ducks separately. It is softer, finer, and brings a better price.'

Veteran poultry man Mr. David Hart, of Welland, said local fowl feathers could be made to look just as attractive in women's hats as many im portations. To prove it, he had dyed the feathers in green, blues, reds, and multi-colors. He said, 'Any breed of fowl with good markings on its feathers is suitable.' Turkeys, too Mr. Hart has made fluffy yel low creations out of turkey feathers, and eye - catching creations of long tail feathers. Millinery department head of a big city store said, 'Feathers on hats are unseasonable at C resent. But there will be a ig vogue again next winter. We use imported English feathers on our hats. 'There are pheasant feathers and fowl feathers. Ostrich feathers? There's always a little demand for them. 'But very little.'
