Something Magic Happening

Just had to take some time off frantic correcting to say that something magic is happening over at the Gippsland Guardian in the Victorian newspapers.

We have got it online through a $4,000 grant from Wellington Shire Council, and agreed we would raise $3,300 cash ourselves to pay the full sum. But to get grant money, we have to at least match the funding dollar for dollar. Although we can use work in kind.

So, what we did was factored in the cost of volunteers correcting all the meeting reports for the Alberton Roads Board / Shire Council, and bingo, we had a much bigger input than the $4,000 needed. So that is what we committed to doing.

So, up goes the Guardian (two uploads so far), so I went out on a Rootsweb list for the region, and asked for text correctors, and explained how to find the necessary articles. Thought I might get one or two - but they have come from everywhere! Some I can recognise, some of them I have no idea who they are, as their user name here is nothing like their e-mail address. And "anonymous" is so active I think there is more than one of him/her.

And correcting is happening so fast I cannot keep up with it. I will correct an article, and need to jump about four more to get to the next article.

At times like this, it would be really good to have some sort of facility to message other users who are doing this correcting on the same project, as I am sure there are people out there just waiting to be organised in projects like this!

Went to correct an article on Adam Lindsay Gordon, but decided to first check if there was an earlier printing of it. However, even though the title of the article appears on the display for that page of the newspaper, the article itself does not appear in search results (2 out of 3), when the title is used as the search information.

Does anyone know why this is so?
Also, does this mean that there are a lot more inaccurate search results occurring?

Tried the search three times, using different parts of the title, but the first two searches gave no results:

1) "CHRONOLOGY OF ADAM LINDSAY"
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/re...DAM+LINDSAY%22

2) "GRODON'S LIFE PUBLISHED FOR"
= no hits
(Unfortunately, the name of Adam Lindsay GRODON is now stuck in my head forever)

3) "FIRST TIME" "Adventurous Career Of"
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/re...s+Career+Of%22
= got a hit

Have left the article in its uncorrected state, so the search results can be checked by others.

The article in question is:
CHRONOLOGY OF ADAM LINDSAY GRODON'S LIFE PUBLISHED FOR FIRST TIME. Adventurous Career Of Australia's Great Poet. FIRST VERSES PUBLISHED BY "THE WATCH."

First post, folks.

I'm mulling the obituary for a prominent person who died in Sydney in 1930:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16694199

The obituary lists mourners, all of whom are male; yet the deceased, who died unexpectedly, left a wife and three daughters, one married, as well as two sons.

Is their omission simply style for those times? or could it be inferred that the wife and daughters didn't attend the funeral?

Can anyone point to a contemporary obituary in which female members of the family are named?

...later:

after checking SHM obituaries for January 1930, it's safe to say that female family members are often mentioned, usually by name and relationship to the deceased, sometimes by relationship only.

So I think it's safe to infer that in the case in question, neither his widow nor any of his three daughters attended Harry's funeral.

Following a fun Q&A on Trove last night over at Inside History (thanks guys!), i am tempted to ask how many correctors there are at the minute. Given the main fb page for the library has just said there are "hundreds".

I queried that, and received this logical response:

It's hard to calculate "total" numbers... There certainly have been thousands of text-correctors over time but if you try and calculate "active" editors then you have to determine a cutoff date (i.e. have they edited in the last 24 hours, last week, last month...) and you also have to determine a minimum number of actions which could (i.e. 1 line of correction, 1 whole article, 20?...). All of these change the "total" number...

However, since I have worked my butt off to get to 299, only to take a rest and find myself back at 328 (and a lot of hard work in front of me to regain lost ground!), I reckon there are a heck of a lot more than just "hundreds" at work at the minute.

Are there any figures we can have?

PS I have asked the main fb page if we can have a T Shirt - we want to see a Trovalition of Textaholics in T Shirts. If yu feel the same, there is also the main NLA fb page to encourage the gift shop to stock them....
I am trying to find out what happened to a Relative of mine, his name was Douglas Robson he was born in 1835 in Newcastle, England, his Parents were John Robson & Eleanor Urwin.
Douglas was a Seaman and the last record I have of him is being a on the 'SS Cairngorm' which sailed to Sydney in 1860, after that the trail runs cold, there is no sign of him returning to England to marry and no sign of his death.
I am wondering if he settled in Australia, maybe someone can shed some light on this mystery.
Thanks

A recent review of ‘An evening with Bryn Terfel’ at the Sydney Opera House mentioned that Bryn Terfel , introducing song settings of John Masefield, was ’sure John Masefield would have loved Sydney harbour’ . The reviewer, Peter McCallum notes that John Masefield did in fact vist Sydney in 1934, as ‘the National Library's splendid Trove database shows”.Quite a bit of his journey can be retraced through the digitised newspaper articles of the day.

John Masefield gave a reading of his poems in the Great Hall of Sydney University on 21 November 1934 and again the following day in the Sydney University Union Hall. In Sydney he was photographed with C.E.W Bean, the official Commonwealth War Historian.

Some of the wonders of Australia which amazed him included the miles of giant gums, great open plains, shearing sheds and 'charming people' but perhaps 'the thing that lingers so lovingly in his heart is the song of the magpie', 'the very soul of the Australian scene'.

While in Canberra, he and the Governor General, Sir Iasaac Isaacs, laid the foundation stones of the new National Library. Masefield paid tribute to the National Library a ‘lodestar for scholars of the future’. After this, ‘the Poet Laureate was entertained by the Federal Cabinet at luncheon and at afternoon tea, at which all members of Parliament and their wives were present’.

He was a guest in Melbourne at the centenary celebrations. He was thrilled by the Victoria forests and became fascinated with boomerang throwing: 'I still stand carefully from under when delivering a boomerang'. He expressed his desire to see the 'Melbourne Cup as a spectacle not as a business'. Confirmation in Trove that he actually saw Peter Pan win the 1934 Melbourne Cup eludes me.

'The Shakespeare Society was fortunate in being able to celebrate its jubilee with Mr. Masefield, who gave his Romanes lecture on Shakespeare— a most sympathetic and vivid picture of the young Shakespeare and his England.' He addressed pupils from public schools in the Melbourne Town Hall.

An etching of John Masefield was done by artist Norma Bull who met him during his time in Melbourne in 1934. He was ‘much impressed with her art’.

In Adelaide for just a day he was asked by a woman for a memento. Offering an autograph, she asked for something else. He drew her a ship, in a lightning sketch, and signed it.

He read poetry to an audience at the Albert Hall, Canberra under the auspices of the Society of Art and Literature on Friday 23 November telling guests that his Australian visit was a ‘ delight beyond telling’.

Mrs Masefield expressed strong opinions about cooking, gardening, schooling, mining and alcohol. She thought the 8 hour day too long for the miners she visited in Kalgoorlie and worried about them getting enough sunlight. She admired the beauty of the natural flora, preferring the bottle brush to the flannel flower. She commented that Australians were ‘physically beautiful specimens”; John Masefield called them ‘people of the sun’.

They crossed the country by rail after visiting Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne to join their ship the 'Orontes' at Fremantle.

One line of a newspaper article I've just been correcting had been transcribed as two lines (neither making sense - the first was based on the top half of the characters and the second, based on the bottom half). I corrected the 'first line' in the 'Edit this text' and deleted the text from the second. Is it possible to delete the 'spare' line?

Hi

I have not used these forums before, so forgive me if this is popping up in the wrong place, or you have been over this issue a thousand times before.

I have been doing corrections to my local historical paper 'The Cobargo Chronicle.' I am having the best time doing it, but I have noticed that someone has been re-correcting my work and taking out line breaks li-
ke these and changing it to look
like this.

My understanding and great hope is that what is on the page of the newspaper stays EXACTLY how it is, even if there is a spelling eroor. Is there a way to make people read AND understand the guidelines, before they start working on corrections. I had to go back and fix all the corrections they made, and I feel kind of awkward in doing so. As I am sure they mean well and want to be a useful contributor.

The integrity of what was printed is so important.

Cheers
